Lake Superior College

July 16-26, 2007

The Lake Superior College Art Program is hosting an International Wood Firing Conference and Workshop July 16-26, 2007. This conference and workshop is building on relationships from previous work with artists in China and is a follow-up to two World Ceramic Conferences held in China and attended by Lake Superior College faculty.

This internationally publicized event will be attended by thirteen Chinese art students from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, Guangzhou, China, three or more international ceramic art clinicians as well as local artist participants. These invited clinicians and artists will provide both informal demonstrations, as well as participate in conference and workshop activities.

The conference and workshop promises to be a high profile international event that highlights our rich regional art’s resources and creates powerful, long-lasting collaborative relationships on a global scale:

• It will be offered to students locally and nationally in the context of regularly offered Ceramics II & III courses and a 10 day continuing education workshop. The conference will be held at the LSC Arts complex as well as various local artists’ facilities.

• The purposes of the event are many with the central emphasis focusing on bringing the national and international community of ceramic artists to Duluth. Our region is very well known for its rich community of ceramic artists. The local community of artists with their level of expertise merits an event that both showcases them and includes them in the international community. Furthermore, this effort will bring our own art community together through collaborative involvement.

• The concept involves local artists and community citizens providing their own accommodations for guest artists/G.A.F.A. students, wood fire kilns and ceramics facilities for participants to glaze and fire their work. A local organizing committee of LSC staff and 15 local artists will provide housing for visiting Chinese students and international art clinicians. They will also be opening their personal studios for attending conference and workshop participants.

• This event will be advertised on a national and international scale.

• The intent of the concept is that it would become a biannual or annual event.

• It has a global perspective. Bringing participants here from around the globe will provide opportunities for participating artists to develop contacts, friendships and relationships with individuals from other cultures.

• Cross-cultural learning and discoveries are made.

• The global community of artists is expanded.

For further questions about this event please contact Dorian Beaulieu at Lake Superior College: Office 218-725-7715 Studio 218-733-5972 E-mail d.beaulieu@lsc.edu
